CODE: 28105 TITLE: Adjudicators, Hearings Officers, and Judicial Reviewers DEFINITION: Conduct hearings to review and decide claims filed by the government against individuals or organizations, or individual eligibility issues concerning social programs, disability, or unemployment benefits. Determine the existence and the amount of liability, recommend the acceptance or rejection of claims, or compromise settlements according to laws, regulations, policies, and precedent decisions. Confer with persons or organizations involved and prepare written decisions. TASKS: 1. Arranges and conducts hearings to obtain information and evidence relative to disposition of claim. 2. Determines existence and amount of liability, according to law, administrative and judicial precedents and evidence. 3. Counsels parties and recommends acceptance or rejection of compromise settlement offers. 4. Prepares written opinions and decisions. 5. Analyzes evidence and applicable law, regulations, policy and precedent decisions to determine conclusions. 6. Interviews or corresponds with claimants or agents to elicit information. 7. Questions witnesses to obtain information. 8. Reviews and evaluates data on documents, such as claim applications, birth or death certificates, and physician or employer records. 9. Rules on exceptions, motions and admissibility of evidence. 10. Researches laws, regulations, policies and precedent decisions to prepare for hearings. 11. Participates in court proceedings. 12. Issues subpoenas and administers oaths to prepare for formal hearing. 13. Obtains additional information to clarify evidence. 14. Authorizes payment of valid claims. 15.
